World Health Organization - Eastern Mediterranean Region Office
Dr Arshad Altaf is a physician and a public health professional trained in Pakistan and the United States. He is a Technical Officer and acting coordinator in the Science Information and Dissemination Department of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office in Cairo. From the Regional Office, he supports the research spectrum in EMR countries. Dr Altaf’s public health and academic career spans two decades of working in HIV and AIDS epidemiology, policy making, and country support. He has also extensively worked in the areas of research ethics and research integrity. He has secured multiple research grants on a variety of topics in communicable diseases. Dr Altaf has more than fifty publications in peer-reviewed journals, most of them as the primary author. He is also on the editorial board of Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal.

Ahmed Mandil is Professor of Epidemiology, High Institute of Public Health, University of Alexandria, Egypt. He was Former Coordinator, Research & Innovation and Former Secretary, EM-Research Ethics Review Committee, WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, Cairo, Egypt (2014-2023). He received his bachelor degree in medicine and surgery (1981) and masters in Pediatrics (1985) from Alexandria University, Egypt. Subsequently, he received his Doctorate in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Public Health, USA (1991).
He served as Secretary, International Epidemiological Association (2002-2008), and currently serves as board member / peer reviewer of scientific journals including WHO Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMHJ), Journal of Epidemiology & Global Health (JEGH), and Journal of Family & Community Medicine (JFCM).

Managing Editor
James is currently Managing Editor of the Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal, published by WHO/EMRO. He has over 25 years of experience working on programme and corporate communications, publications and editing for national and international organizations. His experience spans a wide range of development issues, including public health, HIV/AIDS and TB, key populations, agriculture, justice, drugs and crime, migration, terrorism, evaluation, sustainable development, and mine action. He holds a bachelor’s degree in agronomy, a master’s degree in professional communication and a postgraduate diploma in journalism.
