The Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences embodies the vision of its Founder in advancing the medical and educational sciences. The late Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum’s efforts in this direction led to the establishment of the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences and the Hamdan Foundation for Distinguished Academic Performance in 1998.

Today, these two legacies merge to form a unified force, building upon 25 years of remarkable achievements. From pioneering medical research to empowering exceptional students, the Foundation aims to honor excellence and foster a culture of creativity and innovation.

Award Categories

The Best Research in Healthcare Award is intended for early-career healthcare professionals, to recognize the best research talents in this group, and to encourage a culture of research. The selection of the awardee is based on a research paper written and submitted by the applicant.

Three research papers are honored with this Award annually. The Award includes a monetary prize of AED 100,000 (equivalent to USD 27,000) per winning paper.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applications are open for research undertaken in medicine and all specialties in the healthcare sector (including medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, dietetics, physiotherapy, and other allied health specialties)
  • The research has been primarily performed by early-career professionals; defined as graduates or trainees within residency or training programs who have not exceeded five years since their graduation date.
  • The research must not be published.
  • The applicant must be:
    1. Early-career professional
    2. First author of the paper submitted.
    3. UAE citizen or resident
  • If an applicant surpasses the initial five-year time limit following graduation, they are granted an additional grace period of two years to submit research that was conducted within the first five-year timeframe.
  • The scientific research must have been conducted within the UAE within the specified time frame.
  • Previous applicants may submit new applications with new research papers.
  • Past winners of the Award are only eligible to apply if three or more years have passed since their last winning application.

Terms & Conditions

  • Each applicant is permitted to submit one research paper for consideration in each Award cycle.
  • Applications are to be submitted through the designated submission portal.
  • The submitted paper should list all individuals who have made significant contributions towards the research as authors.
  • The combined contribution made by early-career professionals in the paper must be at least 50% of the total work involved in the project.
  • Citations should be complete, accurate, consistent, properly formatted, and available online.
  • Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered for evaluation.
  • Submissions that do not comply with the eligibility criteria or breach these terms and conditions are subject to disqualification at the Foundation's discretion.
  • In the case of group submissions, the disbursement of the prize money is based on individual contributions to the research work.
  • The decision of the judging panel is considered final and not subject to appeal.
  • The Foundation retains the right to modify or cancel the Award at any time, with or without prior notice, for any reason.
  • Authors of the winning paper will be required to provide the following to be used for publication on the Foundation’s website and media channels:
    1. Layperson summary of the research paper.
    2. A short profile of themselves, along with individual pictures.
  • The organization reserves the right to revoke the award if it is determined that the submission is plagiarized and/or does not adhere to the specified terms and conditions.

Submission Requirements

  • Submission must meet the eligibility criteria specified above.
  • Submissions need to be in English.
  • The curriculum vitae of all early career professionals listed as authors on the paper, as well as that of the principal investigator of the project need to be submitted.
  • Applicants should submit a letter from the project principal investigator stating the below:
    1. No objection to the submission of the paper for the Award.
    2. Detailed author contribution for each individual author listed on the paper, along with an approximate percentage breakdown of the contribution each author has made to the project.
    3. Signatures of all authors listed on the paper.
  • A document containing the following information should be submitted:
    1. Title of the paper
    2. Authors
    3. Affiliations

  • The submitted paper must follow the format outlined below and keep to the word count specified:
    1. Title
    2. Abstract (max. 250 words)
    3. Introduction (max. 750 words)
    4. Materials and methods (max. 1000 words)
    5. Results (max. 750 words)
    6. Discussion (max. 1000 words)
    7. Conclusion and Limitations (max. 250 words)
    8. Funding where applicable
    9. Author contributions

The Hamdan Award for Distinguished Personalities is conferred upon Emirati individuals who have significantly impacted the healthcare field in the UAE.

Two individuals are honored with this Award annually. The Award includes a monetary prize of AED 200,000 (equivalent to USD 54,000 per winner.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominations are open for healthcare professionals in the UAE, including doctors (specialists and higher), pharmacists, nurses, dentists, allied health professionals, etc.
  • The nominee must be an Emirati citizen.
  • Nominations can be made only by organizations/entities for individuals currently employed by them.
  • A minimum of ten years of service in their field is mandatory.
  • The nominee must have contributions that extend beyond clinical practice and research, includes but not limited to:
    1. Teaching/Training/Communication (Developing training programs/courses, Establish joint educational programs, Mentorship, Participation in conferences, and Knowledge sharing with the public and media)
    2. Administrative/Leadership responsibilities (Fostering change and demonstrating commitment to improving health standards, Establishing centers/departments, Influencing policies, protocol development, committee service, and Creating local-international affiliations)
    3. Community health initiatives (Development of patient groups, databases, and disease associations, Improving healthcare access, awareness, and supporting the community, and Volunteering services or humanitarian work within or outside the UAE)
  • Contributions should have primarily affected and improved healthcare within the UAE.
  • Past winners of the award are not eligible.

  • Nominations can be made only by organizations/entities for individuals currently employed by them.
  • The nominating body can recommend up to three names provided they are from different professional backgrounds (Doctors, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, allied health professionals, etc.).
  • Applications are to be submitted through the designated submission portal.
  • Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered for evaluation.
  • Submissions that do not comply with the eligibility criteria or breach these terms and conditions are subject to disqualification at the Foundation's discretion.

The Innovation in Healthcare Award is presented to projects that demonstrate outstanding innovation in the field of healthcare. This Award recognizes and celebrates initiatives that have contributed to advancing and enhancing healthcare services, ultimately benefiting the well-being of individuals and the broader healthcare community in the UAE.

Two projects/initiatives are honoured with this Award annually. The Award includes a monetary prize of AED 250,000 (equivalent to USD 67,500) per winning project.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominations are open to all healthcare and non-healthcare facilities in the UAE.
  • The Award is presented to innovative, newly developed (or significantly improved) projects, programs, or services in healthcare.
  • Applications are open for all initiatives, whether from individuals, groups, or institutions.
  • Theoretical and unapplied work does not qualify for the Award.
  • Previous participants or winners may submit new applications for new initiatives.

Terms & Conditions

  • Only self-nominations are accepted.
  • Each applicant is permitted to submit one project for consideration in each Award cycle.

  • A letter from the team members stating the following is required:
    1. No objection to the submission of the award.
    2. Detailed contribution of each individual listed on the team, along with an approximate percentage breakdown of their contribution to the project.
    3. Signatures of all individuals listed on the team.
  • The submitted project must follow the outlined format:
    1. Project title along with names of individuals forming the project team.
    2. Project brief: Abstract with emphasis on the innovative aspect of the project (max. 350 words)
    3. Background: The context/need of the project (max. 300 words)
    4. Objective: What were you aiming to achieve (max. 200 words)
    5. Implementation: (max. 1500 words) (Steps and stages, Barriers and solutions, and Feasibility)
    6. Result: How did the project meet the objective (Provide detailed quantifiable information) (max. 750 words)
    7. Discussion and future directive: Discuss the next steps of the project, feasibility of future implementation, and potential impact. (max. 1,000 words)
    8. Ethics: Discussion about ethical considerations. (max. 200 words)
  • Attach supporting documents (photos, reports, results, end user reviews, etc.).
  • Acknowledgements to any funding or institutions that played a part in the project.
  • A concise layperson’s summary of the project, not exceeding 300 words, must be included.

The Arab Award in Genetics is a testament to the Foundation’s commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in the critical field of human genetics. This Award is dedicated to acknowledging mid-career clinicians and researchers actively engaged in the realm of human genetics and genomics within the Arab World and recognizes their outstanding and recent scientific contributions that have made a significant impact on the Arab World.

The Award is granted to one recipient annually and includes a monetary prize of AED 370,000 (equivalent to USD 100,000).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to physicians and researchers in the field of human genetics, particularly medical genetics, and genomics, within the Arab World.
  • Nominees must be actively affiliated with an institution in the Arab World.
  • Nominees should have a strong research track record or notable scientific achievements in genomics or genetics over the past ten years, demonstrated by significant discoveries or a series of relevant contributions in the Arab World.
  • Previous winners of this Award are not eligible for nomination.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Include a comprehensive CV that highlights the nominee's academic and professional achievements, publication record, and a list of relevant honors and awards.
  • Supporting Documents: This may include a list of publications, patents, research projects, or any other evidence of their scientific impact.
  • Letters of Recommendation: At least two letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the nominee's contributions and impact in the field of human genetics in the Arab world will be required. At least one of these letters should be from an individual outside the nominee’s current affiliation.

The Arab Award for Research in Healthcare reiterates the Foundation's commitment to fostering and acknowledging high-impact healthcare research contributions originating from the Arab World. This award is conferred upon teams of researchers from the Arab World, in recognition of their exceptional achievement, specifically the publication of a substantial research paper in the field of medicine and healthcare, featured in an internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal.

  • Applications are open to research papers on healthcare, conducted principally within research facilities based in the Arab World.
  • Submissions are open to all healthcare specialties.
  • Submitted research papers must contain original content. Reviews, letters, and comments are not eligible for consideration.
  • The submitted research must be published in an indexed, peer-reviewed, online scientific journal within two years of the Award’s submission deadline.
  • Past applicants are eligible to submit new applications, provided the submission features new and distinct research endeavors.
